What to Wear for Your Fall Family Photography Session: Tips for Looking Your Best
A photography session is a fantastic way to capture memories, milestones, or just the everyday moments of life. However, choosing the right outfit can make a significant difference in how your photos turn out. Here are some tips to help you select the perfect attire for your next photo shoot:
1. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in the family wearing matching outfits. Instead, opt for coordinating colors and patterns. Choose a color palette and have everyone select outfits within that range. This creates a cohesive look without the uniform effect. Think of complementary colors and subtle patterns that work well together rather than clashing prints.
2. Opt for Comfort
Comfort is key in a photo session. If you’re uncomfortable, it will show in your photos. Choose outfits that fit well and allow you to move freely. Avoid anything too tight or too loose, and make sure shoes are comfortable if you’ll be standing or walking for extended periods.
3. Keep It Classic
Trendy clothes can quickly become outdated, and flashy patterns or bright colors might overshadow the subject of the photo: you! Stick to classic styles and neutral or soft colors for timeless images that won’t look dated in a few years. Solid colors often work best and allow the focus to remain on you rather than your clothing.
4. Consider the Location
The setting of your photo shoot should influence your outfit choice. For a natural outdoor session, earthy tones and soft textures work well. In an urban environment, you might opt for something a bit more polished or edgy. Always consider how your outfit will contrast with or complement the background.
PRO TIPS:
Additionally, here are some expert outfit tips from two clients that I’ve had the pleasure of photographing regularly over the years. Julie and Jennifer are experts in dressing their families, so I knew their tips and tricks would be perfect to share with you!
These insights are just a glimpse into how clients prepare for sessions, ensuring everyone is comfortable and happy, and they stay true to their family’s style.
Julie: “Don’t over think it! First, pick the mama outfit and style around it. Just because it’s fall, you don’t necessarily need to go with “fall” colors, i.e. orange, brown, etc. Go with your favorite colors/patterns and what suits your style. For example, a fun floral pink dress for mama and pull the accent colors for the kids and dad. Don’t forget the accessories, fun necklace and earrings, knee socks for little ones, fun headbands for tween/teen, a sweater that complements mamas/kids dress that she’ll actually wear again!”
Jennifer: “I usually start with the boys outfits and find stuff for my husband and I based on that. I try not to be too “matchy matchy” and also to not repeat color schemes. Also, I start early with planning in case I find clothes and end up not liking them or they don’t fit comfortably. I lay everything out on the bed and see how it looks together.”
See what I mean? Gorgeous!
