Fifteen years ago, I started my photography business with big dreams, a camera, and zero clue about what I was doing. I thought success meant working nonstop, taking every client who inquired, and striving for perfection in every session. Spoiler alert: I was wrong.
Looking back, I wish I could tell my younger self a few things—lessons that came from years of trial and error, burnout and breakthroughs. If you’re in the thick of building a business, I hope these insights help you skip some of the hard lessons I had to learn the long way.
1️⃣ Busy Doesn’t Mean Successful
In the beginning, I equated success with being constantly busy. I booked every session I could, answered emails at all hours, and said “yes” to everything. But here’s the truth: hustling 24/7 isn’t the goal—working smarter, setting boundaries, and making space for life is.
Now, I focus on intentional work, automating where I can, and only taking on projects that align with my goals. Success isn’t about how much you do—it’s about doing the right things.
2️⃣ The Right Clients Make All the Difference
Not every client will be your person, and that’s okay. In the early days, I was afraid to turn down work—even when I knew it wasn’t the right fit. But the right clients—those who respect your time, value your work, and trust your process—make business so much more fulfilling.
Now, I attract clients who align with my style and values. And guess what? Work feels lighter, sessions are more fun, and I never dread opening my inbox.
3️⃣ Perfection is Overrated
I used to hold myself back, waiting until everything was perfect before launching a new service, posting a new offer, or sharing my work. But I’ve learned that done is better than perfect. Growth comes from showing up, learning, and improving—not waiting until everything is flawless.
So if you’re hesitating because you don’t feel “ready” yet—just start. The best way to grow is to take action, even when it’s messy.
4️⃣ Your Business Should Support Your Life—Not the Other Way Around
It’s easy to get caught up in the grind and let your business run your life. But at the end of the day, what’s the point of success if you don’t have time to enjoy it? Success isn’t just about income; it’s about freedom, joy, and having time for what matters most.
For me, that means making space for my family, my health, and actual rest. Because when I take care of myself, I show up better in my business and my life.
If you’re in a season of hustle, burnout, or doubt—keep going. Trust the process, learn from every step, and remember: success is what you make it. 💛
